From Princeton University in New Jersey to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the same chant can be heard: “Disclose! The specifics of student protesters’ divestment demands vary in scope from school to school. Other students, like those at Cornell University and Yale, are asking their schools to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. Other common threads include demanding universities disclose their investments, sever academic ties with Israeli universities and support a ceasefire in Gaza. Proponents for divestment counter that its value lies in raising awareness and stigmatizing partnerships with targeted regimes or industries.

The energy sector has pulled up from behind to overtake nearly every other sector of the market this year and may still have room to advance, according to analysts. The energy sector has gotten a lift as crude oil prices are on a tear this year after plummeting in the last quarter of 2023. The refiners Marathon Petroleum , Phillips 66 and Valero also hit all-time highs on Friday. Diamondback Energy is trading at all-time highs Monday dating back to its IPO in October 2012, while ConocoPhillips is at levels that have not been seen since November 2022. "We think it's a theme that has more to go as well," Ginsberg said of the energy sector rally.

The energy sector is demonstrating strength with a "compelling valuation" that could set stocks up for a comeback after underperforming the broader market since September, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley recommends ConocoPhillips , Devon Energy , Occidental Petroleum and Diamondback Energy as ways to play the potential comeback. The energy sector has been the best performer over the past month, but is still lagging the rally that began in October. The S & P 500 energy sector is up more than 11% in 2024, while West Texas Intermediate futures have gained 14%. Earnings revision breadth for energy stocks also appears to have bottomed and is moving in a positive direction, according to Morgan Stanley.

Equities may be trading near their record highs, but there are still opportunities to buy some stocks at bargain-basement prices. To meet this criteria, the stocks had to have a trailing 12 month price-to-earnings ratio less than their five-year average. Additionally, the names also had to have a forward price-to-earnings ratio for the next 12 months that was below the Nasdaq-100's current 17.6. Here are the names that made the cut: PayPal , which has a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12, was one name that made the list. Also on the list of stocks was pharmaceutical maker AstraZeneca , which has a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 13.7.

Two large Texas oil producers are joining forces in a deal valued at $26 billion, the latest in a wave of consolidation in the U.S. energy industry. Diamondback Energy and Endeavor Energy Resources, both major players in the booming Permian Basin oil field that straddles New Mexico and Texas, announced on Monday that they would merge in a cash-and-stock deal, with Diamondback’s shareholders owning about 60 percent of the combined company. The Permian Basin was once seen as a worn-out patch. The basin has been transformed into the most productive oil and gas field in the United States. “With this combination, Diamondback not only gets bigger, it gets better,” Travis Stice, the company’s chief executive, said in a statement.

Occidental Petroleum and Diamondback Energy may be poised to rally after U.S. crude oil prices broke above a key resistance level on Friday, according to the chief market strategist at Miller Tabak. "That paves the way for higher prices," said Bob Yawger, managing director and energy futures strategist at Mizuho Americas. "If crude oil rolls back over, breaks below that level — that's going to tell you that I'm wrong. "And that tells me that if he's buying a stock that's highly leveraged to the price of oil, he believes oil prices are going higher." Just on Friday, Houthi militants claimed responsibility for a missile attack on an oil tanker, while a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian fuel terminal on the Baltic Sea helped push oil prices higher earlier in the week.
